Growth modes of Fe(110) revisited: a contribution of self-assembly to magnetic materials
We have revisited the epitaxial growth modes of Fe on W(110) and Mo(110), and
propose an overview or our contribution to the field. We show that the
Stranski-Krastanov growth mode, recognized for a long time in these systems, is
in fact characterized by a bimodal distribution of islands for growth
temperature in the range 250-700°C. We observe firstly compact islands
whose shape is determined by Wulff-Kaischev's theorem, secondly thin and flat
islands that display a preferred height, ie independant from nominal thickness
and deposition procedure (1.4nm for Mo, and 5.5nm for W on the average). We
used this effect to fabricate self-organized arrays of nanometers-thick stripes
by step decoration. Self-assembled nano-ties are also obtained for nucleation
of the flat islands on Mo at fairly high temperature, ie 800°C. Finally,
using interfacial layers and solid solutions we separate two effects on the
preferred height, first that of the interfacial energy, second that of the

Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient with erythroblastopenia and thymoma: Reactivation after topical corticosteroids
We report a 69-year-old female with erythroblastopenia and thymoma who developed lesions of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) after thymectomy, 2 months after the initiation of therapy with methylprednisolone. Control of mucocutaneous KS lesions was obtained with radiotherapy, interferon alfa-2b and withdrawal of systemic immunosuppressive therapy. Erosive oral lichen planus appeared later, and after therapy with topical corticosteroids a new lesion of KS developed that regressed after withdrawal of topical corticosteroids. The detection of HHV-8 only in lesional skin supports the hypothesis that this virus can trigger the development of KS lesions
Vela X-1 as a laboratory for accretion in High-Mass X-ray Binaries
Vela X-1 is an eclipsing high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) consisting of a 283s
accreting X-ray pulsar in a close orbit of 8.964 days around the B0.5Ib
supergiant HD77581 at a distance of just 2.4 kpc. The system is considered a
prototype of wind-accreting HMXB and it has been used as a baseline in
different theoretical or modelling studies.
We discuss the observational properties of the system and the use of the
observational data as laboratory to test recent developments in modelling the
accretion process in High-Mass X-ray Binaries (e.g., Sander et al. 2018; El
Mellah et al. 2018), which range from detailed descriptions of the wind
acceleration to modelling of the structure of the flow of matter close to the

Eslicarbazepine acetate as a replacement for levetiracetam in people with epilepsy developing behavioral adverse events
BACKGROUND: Psychiatric and behavioral side effects (PBSEs) are a major cause of antiepileptic drug (AED) withdrawal. Levetiracetam (LEV) is a recognized first-line AED with good seizure outcomes but recognized with PBSEs. Eslicarbazepine (ESL) is considered to function similarly to an active metabolite of the commonly used carbamazepine (CBZ). Carbamazepine is used as psychotropic medication to assist in various psychiatric illnesses such as mood disorders, aggression, and anxiety. AIM: The aim was to evaluate the psychiatric profile of ESL in people who had LEV withdrawn due to PBSEs in routine clinical practice to see if ESL can be used as a possible alternative to LEV. METHODS: A retrospective observational review was conducted in two UK epilepsy centers looking at all cases exposed to ESL since its licensing in 2010. The ESL group was all patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy who developed intolerable PBSEs to LEV, subsequently trialed on ESL. The ESL group was matched to a group who tolerated LEV without intolerable PBSEs. Psychiatric disorders were identified from case notes. The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) was used to outcome change in mood. Clinical diagnoses of a mental disorder were compared between groups using the Fisher's exact test. Group differences in HAM-D scores were assessed using the independent samples t-test (alpha=0.05). RESULTS: The total number of people with active epilepsy in the two centers was 2142 of whom 46 had been exposed to ESL. Twenty-six had previous exposure to LEV and had intolerable PBSEs who were matched to a person tolerating LEV. There was no statistical differences in the two groups for mental disorders including mood as measured by HAM-D (Chi-square test: p=0.28). CONCLUSION: The ESL was well tolerated and did not produce significant PBSEs in those who had PBSEs with LEV leading to withdrawal of the drug. Though numbers were small, the findings suggest that ESL could be a treatment option in those who develop PBSEs with LEV and possibly other AEDs
Demonstration of a picosecond Bragg switch for hard x-rays in a synchrotron-based pump-probe experiment
We report a benchmark experiment that demonstrates shortening of hard x-ray
pulses in a synchrotron-based optical pump - x-ray probe experiment. The pulse
shortening device, a picosecond Bragg switch, reduces the temporal resolution
of an incident x-ray pulse to 7.5 ps. We employ the Bragg switch to monitor
propagating sound waves in nanometer-thin epitaxial films. With the
experimental data we infer pulse duration, diffraction efficiency and switching
contrast of the device. A detailed efficiency analysis shows, that the switch
can deliver up to 1010 photons/sec in high-repetition rate synchrotron
experiments
The Wolf-Rayet binaries of the nitrogen sequence in the Large Magellanic Cloud: spectroscopy, orbital analysis, formation, and evolution
Massive Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars dominate the radiative and mechanical energy
budget of galaxies and probe a critical phase in the evolution of massive stars
prior to core-collapse. It is not known whether core He-burning WR stars
(classical WR, cWR) form predominantly through wind-stripping (w-WR) or binary
stripping (b-WR). With spectroscopy of WR binaries so-far largely avoided due
to its complexity, our study focuses on the 44 WR binaries / binary candidates
of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, metallicity Z~0.5 Zsun), identified on the
basis of radial velocity variations, composite spectra, or high X-ray
luminosities. Relying on a diverse spectroscopic database, we aim to derive the
physical and orbital parameters of our targets, confronting evolution models of
evolved massive stars at sub-solar metallicity, and constraining the impact of
binary interaction in forming them. Spectroscopy is performed using the Potsdam
Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) code and cross-correlation techniques. Disentanglement is
performed using the code Spectangular or the shift-and-add algorithm.
Evolutionary status is interpreted using the Binary Population and Spectral
Synthesis (BPASS) code, exploring binary interaction and chemically-homogeneous
evolution.
No obvious dichotomy in the locations of apparently-single and binary WN
stars on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is apparent. According to commonly
used stellar evolution models (BPASS, Geneva), most apparently-single WN stars
could not have formed as single stars, implying that they were stripped by an
undetected companion. Otherwise, it must follow that pre-WR mass-loss/mixing
(e.g., during the red supergiant phase) are strongly underestimated in standard

Consistent description of NN and pi-N interactions using the solitary boson exchange potential
A unified description of NN and pi-N elastic scattering is presented in the
framework of the one solitary boson exchange potential (OSBEP). This model
already successfully applied to analyze NN scattering is now extended to
describe pi-N scattering while also improving its accuracy in the NN domain. We
demonstrate the importance of regularization of pi-N scattering amplitudes
involving Delta isobars and derivative meson-nucleon couplings, as this model
always yields finite amplitudes without recourse to phenomenological form
factors. We find an empirical scaling relation of the meson self interaction
coupling constants consistent with that previously found in the study of NN
scattering. Finally, we demonstrate that the OSBEP model does not contradict

Impaired Cerebellar Functional Connectivity in Schizophrenia Patients and Their Healthy Siblings
The long-standing notion of schizophrenia as a disorder of connectivity is supported by emerging evidence from recent neuroimaging studies, suggesting impairments of both structural and functional connectivity in schizophrenia. However, investigations are generally restricted to supratentorial brain regions, thereby excluding the cerebellum. As increasing evidence suggests that the cerebellum contributes to cognitive and affective processing, aberrant connectivity in schizophrenia may include cerebellar dysconnectivity. Moreover, as schizophrenia is highly heritable, unaffected family members of schizophrenia patients may exhibit similar connectivity profiles. The present study applies resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to determine cerebellar functional connectivity profiles, and the familial component of cerebellar connectivity profiles, in 62 schizophrenia patients and 67 siblings of schizophrenia patients. Compared to healthy control subjects, schizophrenia patients showed impaired functional connectivity between the cerebellum and several left-sided cerebral regions, including the hippocampus, thalamus, middle cingulate gyrus, triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor area, and lingual gyrus (all p < 0.0025, whole-brain significant). Importantly, siblings of schizophrenia patients showed several similarities to patients in cerebellar functional connectivity, suggesting that cerebellar dysconnectivity in schizophrenia might be related to familial factors. In conclusion, our findings suggest that dysconnectivity in schizophrenia involves the cerebellum and that this defect may be related to the risk to develop the illness
